STOP THE PRESS! This is my new all-time favourite Pilates and Yoga Mat!
I recently got my hands on the Onyx Yoga Mat after hearing some glowing recommendations from Pilates peers, and I have to say—it's my new favourite mat!
Right out of the box, the first thing that caught my eye was the sleek, curved design; it looks incredibly stylish. The mat comes in a neutral palette of calming colours, which I love, and you can even buy matching Pilates balls and weights for those who love to co-ordinate!
The mat itself is made from natural rubber with a high-grade polyurethane top surface, which gives it a feel very similar to my long-loved Liforme Yoga Mat (reviewed here). The top-coat polyurethane is both antimicrobial and waterproof, making it moisture-wicking and non-slip. Plus, the mat stays completely glued to the floor—no annoying curled-up edges or flappy corners, which is a huge selling point.
What truly sets the Onyx apart is it's thickness. Available in both 5mm and 8mm options, it offers significantly more cushioning than the Liforme’s 4.2mm. This makes it not only a fantastic yoga mat but arguably the best Pilates mat I’ve ever tried! Many fitness mats on the market are either too thin (as they are designed for yoga), or made from NBR foam—incredibly lightweight but lacking durability and grip. Professional studio mats are great but costly and not at all portable. The Onyx bridges that gap beautifully.

At £69.99 for the 5mm and £89.99 for the 8mm, it’s not the cheapest mat out there, but the quality fully justifies the price. The only downside? The weight. I’ve been testing the 8mm in my studio, and while it’s incredibly comfortable, it is on the heavy-side to carry around at roughly 4kg. Personally, the weight doesn't put me off, for short trips from the car to practice spaces it's perfectly manageable. The only other niggle is that Onyx provide a sturdy Velcro strap to keep it rolled up, but there’s no carry handle or protective bag—something I really hope Onyx addresses in the future.
Overall, this is my new favourite mat for yogis who want extra comfort and for all Pilates goers! If you’re looking for a mat that stays put, provides superior cushioning, and will last you a long time, the Onyx is absolutely worth considering. If you need something lighter for class, go for the 5mm, but if you practice at home, the 8mm is a dream—especially if you have hard floors!
